Unveiling Tomorrow's Cameroon Through Today's News

Breaking

As Cameroon’s president Paul Biya celebrated his 91st birthday on Tuesday, a group of youths from the South-West region gathered to testify their strong support and even express their wish to see him run for the elections next year.

However, the passionate chants of the crowd conceal a deeper truth, highlighting the complex and sometimes contradictory narratives surrounding Biya’s long-lasting rule.

A diversity of individuals, including youth associations, taxi drivers, motorbike riders and other groups, assembled for a celebration at the governor’s office of the South-West. The honorable Donald Malomba, from Buea Urban, expressed the collective sentiment by stating: “Democracy is better under your leadership. You can count on us, and we can count on you.” He expressed their sincere wishes for the President’s longevity, good health and continued achievements.

On behalf of Biya, governor Bernard Okalia Bilai expressed his gratitude for the bravery of the youths in the face of acts of violence. He also thanked them for their unwavering support. However, a closer look reveals a more nuanced picture.

Only wishes, no demands for remedying the situation

A significant number of these youths have grown up with Biya as president, being born within the first 15 years of his tenure. This reality raises questions about their familiarity with other leaders or the actual consequences of Biya’s policies on their daily lives.

The ongoing crisis in the Anglophone regions has had a significant impact on the young generation. Unemployment remains an urgent problem, pushing individuals to explore perilous migratory routes in search of a more promising future. The messages of celebration did not take into account the daily challenges faced by taxi drivers and motorbike riders, such as police harassment and inadequate infrastructure.

Biya, a figure with an extended mandate and a significant impact on Africa, leaves behind a complex legacy. His supporters admire his dedication and visionary approach to national development. However, critics raise concerns about his advanced age, the prevalence of older figures in his government and the potential implications for democratic freedoms.

If Biya decides to run in 2025 and succeeds, he will be 99 years old by the end of his term. The potential implications of this situation raise worries about the future of leadership in Cameroon and its ability to effectively address the urgent issues faced by the country’s youth, especially in the crisis-hit regions.

The festive demonstration on Biya’s birthday offers a snapshot of divided opinions. While many Cameroonian youths, such as these youths from the South-West, display an undying loyalty, their daily lives are characterized by hardships and lack of opportunities. As the 2025 elections approach, the center of the national conversation will inevitably focus on Biya’s legacy and the future of leadership in Cameroon.
