MTN Cameroon’s New CEO Takes Charge with a Vision for Growth and Innovation
The South African telecommunications giant MTN has announced a leadership change at its Cameroonian subsidiary.

Wanda Matandela will take over as CEO of MTN Cameroon, replacing Mitwa Ng'ambi, who is transitioning to lead MTN Côte d’Ivoire. Matandela, currently serving as Chief Commercial Officer at MTN South Africa, is set to assume his new role in March 2025.
A Proven Leader with Extensive Experience
Wanda Matandela joined MTN in 2018 as Chief Enterprise Business Officer, where he spearheaded the revival of the company’s enterprise business division. With over 20 years of professional experience, including more than 13 years in telecommunications, Matandela brings a wealth of knowledge in consumer goods and financial services.
“His strong commercial expertise and stakeholder management skills will be invaluable as he builds on the significant momentum created under Mitwa's leadership,” MTN’s top management said in a statement.
Focus on Service Quality and Network Expansion
As CEO of MTN Cameroon, Matandela will face the critical task of improving service quality—a pressing demand from both Cameroonian authorities and customers. The new leadership is expected to oversee significant investments to enhance the company’s infrastructure.
MTN has earmarked nearly FCFA 62 billion for network expansion and upgrades in 2025, forming the initial phase of a broader three-year investment plan valued at FCFA 187 billion. This initiative aims to strengthen MTN’s position as a leader in telecommunications while meeting rising consumer expectations for faster and more reliable services.
A Milestone Year Ahead for MTN Cameroon
In 2025, MTN Cameroon will celebrate 25 years of operations in the country. The company currently serves nearly 13 million customers and provides mobile financial services alongside electronic communications. Over the past decade, MTN claims to have contributed FCFA 1,062 billion to Cameroon’s state revenues and invested more than FCFA 540 billion to modernize and expand its network.
The company also boasts a substantial impact on employment, creating 1,000 direct jobs and supporting over 100,000 indirect jobs through its extensive network of agents across Cameroon.
Leadership Transition and Strategic Vision
Matandela’s appointment follows the retirement of Djibril Ouattara, former CEO of MTN Côte d’Ivoire, and Mitwa Ng'ambi’s move to take over that role. Ng'ambi's tenure at MTN Cameroon was marked by strong leadership, and Matandela’s arrival is anticipated to bring new perspectives to accelerate growth.
Challenges and Opportunities
With rising expectations from both regulators and customers, Matandela’s primary challenge will be navigating MTN Cameroon’s ambitious expansion plans while maintaining high standards of service quality. The company’s commitment to investing heavily in infrastructure underscores its intent to remain a major player in the country’s telecommunications landscape.
As Cameroon prepares to mark MTN’s 25-year presence, the new leadership will play a crucial role in shaping the future of the company and its contribution to the nation's digital economy.
