Escalating Conflict: Fatal Altercations Rock Yaoundé as Motorcycle Drivers Clash with Municipal Police
In a startling series of events, numerous motorcycle drivers besieged the municipal headquarters in the Nkolofamba district, vehemently protesting against the brutal actions perpetrated by municipal police personnel.
Amid the tumult, one motorcyclist, pursued by these officers, was struck by a vehicle, resulting in severe injuries to his leg. Regrettably, this incident comes hot on the heels of the tragic demise of a municipal police officer from Yaoundé 2 during a similar altercation.
In a disturbing development, a municipal police officer was fatally beaten on Thursday, June 6, 2024, by motorcycle taxi drivers in the second district of Yaoundé. This incident follows heightened tensions between the two factions, stemming from a deadly clash in April.
Indeed, on April 17, a municipal police intervention resulted in the death of a motorcycle taxi driver and his passenger. This tragedy unfolded when a municipal officer, known by the name of Awara, aggressively intercepted the motorcycle taxi, with the passenger on board.
Responding swiftly, the Minister of Territorial Administration, Atanga Nji Paul, convened a crisis meeting with stakeholders. The objective? To establish clear guidelines and prevent future tragedies. Prior to this, the Minister of Territorial Administration vehemently denounced the unfortunate incident.
