Unveiling Tomorrow's Cameroon Through Today's News

Breaking

LONDON/ABUJA, July 13, 2025 (Cameroon Concord) – Nigeria’s former president Muhammadu Buhari has died in London at the age of 82, his family announced Sunday.

Buhari, who served as Nigeria’s civilian president from 2015 to 2023, and previously as military head of state from 1983 to 1985, passed away in a London clinic, according to his longtime spokesperson Garba Shehu.

“The family of the former president has announced the passing on of the former president, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, this afternoon in a clinic in London. May Allah accept him in Aljannatul Firdaus, Amin,” Shehu wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

The announcement was echoed by Buhari’s former aide Bashir Ahmad, who confirmed the death in a similar post.

Anti-Corruption Crusader and Military Ruler

Buhari was a towering figure in Nigeria’s modern political history — known both for his hardline anti-corruption stance and his reputation as a no-nonsense former general. His presidency saw efforts to stabilize the economy, confront the Boko Haram insurgency in the northeast, and tackle endemic graft within the government.

Supporters hailed him as a disciplined reformer, while critics accused him of heavy-handedness and human rights lapses. His tenure was marked by both ambitious reforms and intense political opposition.

Islamic Burial Arrangements

According to the family statement, further details about burial arrangements will be released soon, in line with Islamic funeral rites.

Buhari is survived by his wife Aisha Buhari, their children, and grandchildren.

How will Buhari’s legacy shape Nigeria’s future politics? Will he be remembered more for his anti-corruption drive or for controversies over human rights? How will Nigerians at home and abroad mourn one of their most influential leaders?
