Cameroon: 3 dead after being stroked by a train on a railroad track in Yaounde
Three people were killed on Wednesday, 08.March 2017 at about 8:00 p.m in Yaoundé, after being stroked by a train on the railroad tracks in the neighbourhood of Elig-Edzoa.
According to a statement from the Cameroon train rail network company (Camrail), a train, returning from the rail renewal yard, at the entrance to the city of Yaoundé stroke passers-by on the railroad tracks. The individuals had been trespassing on the tracks, when the tragedy happened. This information was confirmed by eyewitnesses at the scene.
The official death toll stands at three deaths. The toll which was earlier reported as 4 was later corrected, with officials saying that the number of fatalities was actually three..
According to the eyewitnesses, another body was abducted by a family before the arrival of relief, while a third individual who sustained severe injuries, died in a hospital, Camrail said.
Others who sustained injuries were ferried to local hospitals within Yaounde were they are currently being treated. In total, three deaths were recorded. Two of the three bodies were deposited at the morgue of the Central Hospital of Yaounde.
Securing the rail-tracks is a real problem in Cameroon. Local inhabitants often use rail-tracks as short cuts to move around the city. This situation is not conducive to the optimum safety of railway traffic in Cameroon's capital-Yaounde.
As a result, Camrail constantly reminds through awareness campaigns that the crossing of the tracks is rigorously prohibited as stipulated by the Cameroonian highway code.
The incident is under investigation.Further details were not available Thursday morning.
