Security Challenges in CAR: Cameroonian Killed in Attack on Convoy with Russian Allies
A tragic incident occurred on November 18, 2024, in Boali, located in the Central African Republic (CAR), when a group of armed militants attacked a convoy involving Russian allies. The attack resulted in the death of a 46-year-old Cameroonian truck driver, Mohamadou Awal, who was struck by a bullet to the chest.

According to a statement released by the Gendarmerie, the assailants targeted the convoy, which included Russian personnel. Following the attack, Awal was rushed to the General Hospital of Bangui by Russian allies, but he succumbed to his injuries. During the same attack, a Russian national was also injured, suffering a bullet wound to the right thigh. The injured Russian is currently in intensive care at the General Hospital of Bangui.
The Gendarmerie’s investigation team, dispatched to the scene, gathered testimonies from two Cameroonians and one Central African crew member who were present during the attack. They reported hearing gunfire from the top of a hill, prompting the Russian allies to deploy a drone to pinpoint the source of the shots. Upon arriving at the scene, the Russian forces secured the area until the Gendarmerie team arrived for further investigation.
The details surrounding the attack remain limited, but the incident highlights the ongoing security challenges in the CAR. Despite ongoing efforts from both the government and allied forces, militant groups continue to perpetrate violence in the region. This attack, which led to the death of the Cameroonian driver, sheds light on the complex security dynamics involving various actors, including the government, Russian forces, and militants, and raises questions about their objectives and interactions in this volatile environment.
This incident also underscores the continued instability in CAR, where the safety of civilians, particularly foreign nationals, remains precarious amidst the ongoing conflict.
