Unveiling Tomorrow's Cameroon Through Today's News

Breaking

YAOUNDE, Cameroon - March 14, 2024 - In a hearing today at the Yaoundé Military Court, Bruno Bidjang, a journalist with the Anecdote Group, pleaded guilty to charges of spreading false news. Bidjang was arrested in February following the publication of a video on Tik Tok.

The video, according to State funded Cameroon Tribune, contained remarks that some observers interpreted as a call to revolt against state authority. Bidjang's decision to plead guilty expedites the legal process and suggests an admission of wrongdoing. The hearing has been adjourned until April 11 to allow for government prosecutors to present their requisitions.

Separate Case Regarding Martinez Zogo Assassination

This is not the only legal case Bidjang faces. He is also implicated, though released last year, in the ongoing investigation into the assassination of Martinez Zogo, director of Yaoundé's Amplitude radio station. At the next hearing, Bidjang will be heard on charges of "conspiracy of torture and arrest and sequestration" related to the Zogo case.

Anecdote Group Distances Itself

Following Bidjang's arrest, the Anecdote Group, led by Jean-Pierre Amougou Belinga, issued a press release clarifying that Bidjang's views expressed in the video do not represent the company's position.

This case highlights the ongoing challenges faced by journalists in Cameroon, where press freedom concerns persist. Bidjang's guilty plea and the ongoing legal proceedings will be closely watched for developments.
