Some 80 households located on 88 hectares of land in the Sisia neighbourhood of Bamenda III Subdivision, Mezam Division of the North West Region, are today under serious threat after the area was officially declared unfit for human settlement. A study by Global Consulting for ERA-Cameroon, reveals that settlement on the stiff slopes of Sisia Quarter with its flood-prone areas, narrow roads and unplanned buildings, exposes inhabitants to high risks. Ngeh William, an environmental planning consultant with Global Consulting for ERA-Cameroon said that the neighbourhood features a relief with 16,000 inhabitants settled on 172.2 hectares, 88 of which are not suitable for construction. Yet, the quest for shelter on increasingly scarce land in the City of Bamenda is not helping matters.
It is against this backdrop that stakeholders recently endorsed a slum upgrading programme for Sisia neighbourhood. The decision was reached after discussions between Sisia development associations, Bamenda City Council authorities, FEICOM, traditional leaders, the PDUE, etc. The slum upgrading programme includes constructing drainage channels, roads, providing potable water, public and community facilities, town planning, restructuring, resettlement and consolidation of land security. It emerged from the Bamenda workshop that Sisia is a slum settlement because it harbours people who lack durable housing, sufficient living area, access to improved water and sanitation facilities, etc. North West Governor, Adolphe Lele Lafrique and the Inspector General in the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development, Ali Salihou, oversaw the Bamenda workshop. Conceived by the UN-Habitat in partnership with the European Union Commission and African Caribbean and Pacific States, the upgrading programme aims to reduce the population living in slum areas, enhance the process of decentralisation and improve urban governance.

It’s all calm in Yaounde the capital City after the sirens of the Prime Minister’s Motor trots, the sound of drum beats from numerous traditional dance groups, the hallelujah choruses from the religious groups and the heavy deployment of security officials that characterized yesterday’s ceremony. To a visitor coming into Yaounde, it is business as usual, in sharp contrast with the hustling and bustling just 24 hours ago. The new men and women installed in different capacities are now coming to terms with the challenges.
They are being acquainted with the specific missions assigned to them. Most of the new Ministers began working sessions with close collaborators to have an idea on what has been done, what is still left and how to proceed. In respect to this a meeting with the Prime Minister and Head of Government has been scheduled. It is being whispered that the Prime Minister shall reiterate the importance of an urgent take-off especially within a context where critics have frowned at the speed of execution of the Economic Emergency plan.

Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei says the enemies of the Islamic Republic resent the independence of the Iranian nation. “The system of the Islamic Republic is an independent system; and has, since the [1979] Revolution, openly pursued its policies and does not fear the roar of any power or opposing any power’s policies,” the Leader said in a Thursday meeting with Iranian military officials and commanders.
“The emergence of an independent nation that is opposed to the bullies and their affiliates is not tolerable for the hegemonic system,” Ayatollah Khamenei pointed out. Ayatollah Khamenei also noted that the enemy seeks the surrender of the Islamic Republic. “Enmities would not go away by backing down” in the face of the enemy, the Leader said, adding that it is wrong to think that if Iran practices leniency toward the enemy, the latter would reduce its enmity. “Nations are delighted at seeing the Iranian nation progress and unequivocally defend its rights vis-à-vis powers,” Ayatollah Khamenei noted.
The Leader emphasized that, by accelerating their advances, the Iranian Armed Forces must gain such might that would have enemies not dare to even think of invading Iran. “The advances of the military forces in different sectors today are very invaluable; but… the pace [of the progress] must be increased,” the Leader of the Islamic Revolution said.
