In partnership with the African Union Commission, AUC, and the support of the Official Host City, Lagos State,AFRIMA 2016grand awards ceremony is preceded by The AFRIMA Music Village on Friday November 4, 2016, a non-stop music concert with over 40 African artistes performing live at the Waterfront, Bar Beach, Victoria Island, Lagos in Nigeria. Thousands of guests expected in Lagos for the various events. 82-year-old Cameroonian saxophonist and vibraphone player Manu Dibango, is hailed for making an enormous contribution to African music as a whole. Nicknamed ‘The Lion of Cameroon’, Manu Dibango is recognised for developing a music style fusing jazz, funk and traditional Cameroonian music. His song “Soul Makossa” has influenced several popular music hits, including Michael Jackson’s “Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin”, as well as his recording of that song with Akon, the Fugees’ “Cowboys”, and Rihanna’s “Don’t Stop the Music” and Comedian Eddie Murphy in his 1982 parody song “Boogie in your butt”.
Artiste-in-Residence at the ObafemiAwolowo University, Nigeria, King Sunny Ade is classified as one of the most influential musicians of his time. The Nigerian singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist and two-time Grammy award nominee is known for his pioneering of modern world music. His stage performance is characterised by dexterous dancing steps and use of the guitar. Papa Wemba, the late iconic musician from the Democratic Republic of Congo, who died at the age of 67 on April 24, 2016 during a stage performance in Cote d’Ívoire, also pioneered a blend of African, Cuban and Western sounds which became one of Africa’s most popular music styles.
Dubbed the ‘King of Rhumba Rock’, Papa Wemba was also a fashion icon who popularised the La Sape look and style through his musical group Viva la Musica, with whom he performed on stages throughout the world. Speaking about the purpose of the tribute, President and Executive Producer, AFRIMA, Mr. Mike Dada said: “Contemporary African stars will be pledging their loyalty to these grassroot legends of African music to show the beauty of their music through outstanding performances on stage during the AFRIMA awards.
It is also a means of showing the younger generation that they can connect to music made by older generations of artistes and use this to unite the world through music.” Mr. Dada described these three music icons as the ‘voices of African music and the epitome of Africanness’. Some of the top African artistes billed to honour the legacy of the three African legends include: Kiss Daniel (Nigeria); Diamond Platnumz (Tanzania); Brymo (Nigeria); Wax Dey (Cameroon); Seyi Shay (Nigeria);FallyIpupa(DRC), YemiAlade (Nigeria); Victoria Kimani (Kenya); Tiwa Savage (Nigeria); Aramide (Nigeria); Niniola (Nigeria); YCee (Nigeria); TJAN (Nigeria) and Flavour (Nigeria) among others.

Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) musician, Koffi Olomide, has asked for forgiveness from Kenyans following three months after he was arrested for kicking his female dancer in Kenya.
The man known as king of African rumba made the headlines in July after his arrest at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi. He was arrested after the video of his alleged assault went viral on social media.
The police chief ordered his arrest after which he was deported back to the DRC the following day. Olomide’s apology was aired on a popular local comedy show (Churchill Show) in Kenya over the weekend. He asked for forgiveness for he is only human.
“My fellow brothers and sisters in Kenya, I want to send you a message of love and respect. I am sorry for what happened last time and my cry is that you forgive me for what happened.
‘‘I am only a human being even though I am a superstar… Most people thought I would not be able to do it, but I am doing it and I would do it again from the bottom of my heart,” he said.
Days after his return to the DRC, he was picked up at his Kinshasa home and hauled before court. Olomide was charged with assault and battery and was detained in jail. He was granted bail after spending four days in jail. His Kenyan show and another in Zambia were cancelled after the bad press that followed his arrest and deportation. He held his first post-detention show in Brazzaville, the capital of neighbouring Congo Republic a day after his release on bail.
Calls for his arrest and trial were championed by a Congressman Zakarie Bababaswe, who filed a petition on behalf of the Congolese public to have the musician punished for assault. He also released a song dedicated to women. The song titled “Mama pardons” has a chorus of “Mama pardon” – French phrase for ‘sorry mom,’ as Olomide is heard singing at some point saying “forgive me.” Apparently an apology for the assault that got him arrested, deported and charged in court in less than a week. On the same subject.

The MTV AFRICA MUSIC AWARDS (MAMAs) which is the Biggest Music Recognition Ceremony on the African Continent, has in its 6th Edition, nominated Cameroon’s very own MAGASCO in one of the categories to be held in Dome, Johannesburg-South Africa on Saturday 22nd October 2016.
Magasco whose song ”WULE BANG BANG” caught the whole continent by surprise since last year & with a current 775.025 YouTube views, witnesses an international recognition of his talent as it is his first ever nomination at The MAMAs.
It is therefore of no doubt that being recognized by the Continent’s Biggest Music Recognition Platform, will mean a whole lot & even call for celebration for Magasco and his supporters both in/out of Cameroon.
But the point which seems disturbing to us here at Pomradio News is the fact that he is being nominated in the category of BEST FRANCOPHONE alongside Serge Beynaud, J-Rio, Franko & Toofan, whereas he is an Anglophone Cameroonian who rarely sings in the French Language.
Some of the questions that we foresee breaking social media in the days ahead concerning this BEST FRANCOPHONE Category nomination will include,
Would the nomination in this category mean that it is a tactic by MTV to just nominate & deny him of the award?
Because if you can recall, JOVI (One of Cameroon’s finest Rappers) was last year nominated in the same category alongside Pure Francophone Africa’s Artistes like DJ Arafat (Ivory Coast), Laurette Le Pearle (DRC), Tour 2 Garde (Ivory Coast) & Toofan (Togo), which at the end, he was not crowned the winner.
As such, should Magasco who is an Anglophone & not a Francophone Cameroonian be expecting same thing as was JOVI’s case?
If that is the case, what then holds the future of Cameroonian Anglophone Artistes, who seem more talented than their Francophone Brothers?
Does it mean that Cameroonian Anglophone Musicians should sing more in English Language than in the French language so as to avoid being nominated in the ‘Francophone Category’ at International Awards?
This is a question left for the Anglophone Cameroonian Artistes & their supporters in/out of Cameroon to answer, which we at Pomradio News believe should be taken seriously!
