France through its foreign ministry has condemned the attacks in the Far North region of Cameroon by the Nigerian Islamist sect Boko Haram. In a carefully worded statement coming out of Paris for the first time ever since the inception of the Boko Haram incursion into Cameroonian territory, the French Foreign Ministry stated that "France condemns in the strongest terms the terrorist attacks that hit the Far North of Cameroon. We are particularly concerned about the situation of civilians, who are the first victims of the terrorist "published the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on its website January 13, 2015.
The French Foreign Ministry statement also praised the efforts of the Cameroonian authorities and the Cameroon army and promised to provide military support to the multinational force (whose formation is being delayed by French politics) to fight against Boko Haram. Noted the French: "We express our solidarity with the Cameroon authorities and to those of the States of the region involved in the fight against terrorism, including those in the Lake Chad Basin community”.
The French authorities have ordered 10 French soldiers serving in Chad to be sent to a special coordination and liaison military cell put in place by France in Ndjamena- Chad to counter Boko Haram. This latest French moved has been received with mixed feelings in some quarters in Yaoundé and in Abuja. The Cameroonian army repelled the attack launched by the Nigerian Islamist Boko Haram on Kolofata early this morning. The army managed to repel the Boko Haram elements who attacked the city of Kolofata in the Far North region and a military camp serving the Rapid Intervention Force (BIR) situated within the sub district.
Cameroon Concord’s intelligence officers in Maroua have now confirmed that Master Corporal Bella Ako was killed during the violent clashes that lasted several hours. We salute the courage of our men and women in uniform for the sacrifices that they are making to keep the homeland safe. In 2014, Cameroon’s tourism certainly finished with a less than stellar performance relative to 2013. These were the sentiments expressed by Tourism Ministry officials in Extreme-North which is home to most of the country’s touristic sites.
Indeed, in this region of Cameroon, which is prone to constant attacks involving expatriate kidnappings attributed to members of the Nigerian Islamist sect, Boko Haram, hotel occupancy received a major blow.
According to authorised sources, various reports conclude that a drastic fall occurred “in the occupancy levels of some hotels, falling from 90% to 30%.” These statistics could pull the country from the 912000 that came in 2015 compared to 817,000 in 2012.
With the threat of Boko Haram, which drove several Western consulates and embassies to declare the Extreme-North region a risk for their nationals, the goal announced by Philémon Yang, to welcome 2 million tourists in 2015 seems farfetched.
