Burkina Faso Reinstates Revolutionary Motto: A Nod to Sankara’s Legacy
In a move seen as a gesture in reflecting the nation’s revolutionary spirit, the transitional legislative assembly of Burkina Faso has unanimously adopted the iconic motto “La Patrie ou la mort, nous vaincrons” (The Fatherland or Death, We Will Overcome).

This decision, made on Tuesday, reestablishes a slogan first popularized during the presidency of Captain Thomas Sankara from 1983 to 1987, replacing the motto “Unité – Progrès – Justice” (Unity – Progress – Justice) that was introduced in 1997 under the regime of Blaise Compaoré, who ousted Sankara in a coup.
The transition parliament validated the text with a unanimous vote of 71 out of 71 members and will now present it to the constitutional council for final approval from the Burkinabè president. The government has justified this revival as a means to reinforce patriotic sentiments and align constitutional values with the aspirations of the populace.
Historical Significance
Thomas Sankara, who ascended to power through a coup on August 4, 1983, initiated sweeping reforms, including renaming the country from Upper Volta to Burkina Faso, which translates to “the land of upright men” in the local language. The revolutionary slogan was adopted by the National Council of the Revolution (CNR) to symbolize the unwavering commitment of the Burkinabè people to their nation.
For the current government, reinstating the original motto signifies a deep connection to Burkina Faso's revolutionary heritage. In a cabinet meeting held on August 21, officials highlighted the pervasive presence of this slogan in the daily lives of Burkinabè citizens, asserting that it embodies a spirit of sacrifice for the nation.
Context of the Decision
Amidst a backdrop of uncertainty and challenges, including security issues and economic difficulties, this return to revolutionary roots aims to rekindle the resilience and integrity of the Burkinabè people. The government hopes that this symbolic gesture will inspire unity and strengthen national identity during turbulent times.
Supporters of the decision believe that reviving this historical motto will galvanize the populace, reminding them of the revolutionary ideals that propelled Sankara's government. The slogan serves as a rallying cry for unity and a collective commitment to overcoming current adversities.
As Burkina Faso navigates its path forward, the adoption of “La Patrie ou la mort, nous vaincrons” signals a renewed emphasis on patriotism and national solidarity. It stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of Sankara's vision and the commitment of the Burkinabè people to uphold their values in the face of ongoing challenges.
