Cameroon Users Alarmed as TikTok Deletes Content Amid Political Tensions

In response to these concerns, TikTok's West and Central Africa representatives have assured the National Communication Council (CNC) of Cameroon that they will closely examine flagged content, including violent rhetoric and misinformation. A memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed in June 2024 is currently awaiting approval from TikTok's legal team. This agreement underscores a commitment to addressing problematic content but has not alleviated concerns about potential overreach.

Joe Chebonkeng, president of the CNC, emphasized the importance of these measures in light of Cameroon’s upcoming 2025 elections. He noted that TikTok has pledged to prioritize content flagged by the CNC for thorough review. However, critics argue that such actions might endanger freedom of expression, particularly as political tensions rise.

The scrutiny of social media platforms in Cameroon is not new. Since the onset of the anglophone crisis in 2016, which escalated into armed conflict, Facebook has faced accusations of bowing to government pressures.
