Cameroon’s Justice Minister Laurent Esso Evacuated for Medical Treatment
YAOUNDÉ, Cameroon, Jan. 15, 2025 — Laurent Esso, Cameroon’s Minister of Justice and a long-serving pillar of President Paul Biya’s government, has been evacuated to Europe for medical treatment following a deterioration in his health.

Presidential Authorization Secured
According to a government source cited by Jeune Afrique, Esso departed Cameroon with the approval of the presidency. “Regarding Minister of State Laurent Esso, I can confirm that he traveled abroad for medical reasons on a commercial flight,” the source confirmed.
This trip follows a failed attempt to leave the country for treatment last year. Esso recently received the green light from the presidency, amid increasing concerns over his health, particularly after a health scare during the National Unity Day celebrations on May 20, 2024.
Absence from Key Ceremonies
Esso’s declining health had already raised questions after his noticeable absence from the New Year’s greeting ceremony at the Unity Palace on Jan. 10, where senior officials traditionally present their wishes to President Biya.
A Trusted Ally in Paul Biya’s Government
At 82 years old, Laurent Esso has been at the helm of the Ministry of Justice since 2011 and remains one of the key figures in Biya’s administration. His extensive political career and loyalty to the president have solidified his reputation as a cornerstone of the regime. Despite being implicated in recent controversies, Esso continues to enjoy the confidence of President Biya.
Health Concerns Amidst Political Stability
Esso’s health challenges come as Cameroon prepares for a critical electoral year in 2025. His absence may temporarily impact the operations of the Ministry of Justice, but it underscores a broader issue regarding the aging leadership within Biya’s government.
As Esso undergoes treatment abroad, attention will likely turn to his recovery and potential implications for the administration’s continuity during this pivotal period in Cameroon’s political landscape.
