Former CRTV Director Amadou Vamoulké Gets Additional 20-Year Sentence
Yaoundé, Cameroon- Amadou Vamoulké, the former Director General of Cameroon Radio Television (CRTV), has been sentenced to an additional 20 years in prison by the Special Criminal Court (TCS) on Wednesday, August 28, 2024. The conviction is related to charges of embezzlement of public funds.
This new sentence compounds a previous 12-year sentence handed down in 2022, bringing Vamoulké's total prison term to 32 years. The long-running legal case has drawn considerable attention, with Vamoulké having spent years in detention since his arrest in 2016 before his initial sentencing.
Vamoulké, who led CRTV from 2005 to 2016, has consistently denied the charges against him. His defense has argued that the accusations are politically motivated, a claim that has resonated with some international human rights organizations, which have called for his release and criticized the length of his pre-trial detention.
The case underscores ongoing concerns about governance and judicial processes in Cameroon, with some observers questioning the fairness of the trial and the broader implications for press freedom and political expression in the country. The latest ruling is expected to spark further debate, both domestically and internationally.
