Ambazonian Rebels Kill Two Police Officers in Bamenda, Raise Tensions Over Security Failures
Bamenda, Cameroon – Two police officers were tragically killed in a gun attack at UBA bank on Commercial Avenue in Bamenda on Wednesday night, escalating tensions in the already volatile North West Region.

The attack, which has been claimed by the Ambazonian Defense Forces (ADF), the armed wing of the Ambazonian Governing Council, has sparked a renewed outcry from law enforcement officers over their working conditions in the conflict-ridden region.
The two officers, who were on guard duty at the bank, were shot dead when separatist fighters arrived in two cars and opened fire. The attack, which occurred at approximately 7:45 PM, was swift and deadly, with both officers dying on the spot.
In a video released online by the leadership of the ADF, fighters can be seen displaying two rifles taken from the slain officers, further heightening the sense of insecurity among police forces stationed in the area.
The deaths of the two officers have intensified feelings of frustration and anger among their colleagues, who are increasingly vocal about the inadequate support and dangerous conditions they face while serving in the North West Region. Several officers have expressed dissatisfaction with the lack of proper equipment, clear directives, and sufficient manpower to effectively counter the threat posed by separatist fighters.
One officer, speaking anonymously, criticized the current operational conditions, saying, "We are expected to protect the public, but we are not given the resources or the support to protect ourselves. How can we perform our duties when we are constantly at risk, with no clear strategy or backing from our superiors?"
The attack has also reignited concerns about the broader security strategy in the North West and South West regions, where a separatist insurgency has been ongoing since 2016. The conflict, which began as protests by Anglophone activists against perceived marginalization by the Francophone-led government, has since escalated into a violent struggle for independence by separatist groups.
The Ambazonian Defense Forces, a key separatist group, quickly claimed responsibility for the attack in Bamenda. The ADF, which is one of the most organized and well-armed factions in the separatist movement, has been involved in numerous attacks against Cameroonian security forces and government installations.
The group's video, showing the captured rifles of the fallen officers, is a chilling reminder of the ongoing threat posed by the separatists. The ADF and other separatist groups have continued to wage guerrilla-style warfare in the Anglophone regions, making it increasingly difficult for the government to maintain control.
In the aftermath of the attack, there are growing calls for the government to reassess its approach to the conflict in the North West and South West regions. The deaths of the two officers have highlighted the urgent need for better protection and support for those on the front lines of this conflict.
Human rights organizations and local activists have long criticized both the separatists and the government for the violence that has engulfed the region, leading to thousands of deaths and displacements. The latest incident underscores the dangers faced by security forces and civilians alike, as the conflict shows no signs of abating.
As Bamenda mourns the loss of the two officers, the need for a comprehensive and effective strategy to address the conflict has never been more apparent. The government's response to this latest attack will be closely watched, as will its commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of those tasked with upholding the rule of law in one of the country's most troubled regions.
