World cup 2018: Nigeria have Musa to thank for victory

Nigeria have entered the records of this world cup as the second African side to win a match after Senegal. This happened when Musa scored a brace for the team against Iceland on Friday 22 June.

The Nigerian forward now has four goals for his nation in world cup games, netting two so far, in this 21st edition’s finals stage, and becoming the all time world cup top scorer of Nigeria.

His goals were the type of ones that could only be scored by a player with a cool and relaxed mind at the front. This is because, the situations he found himself in did not need haste in execution.

For the first goal which he scored at the 49th minute, it was a carefully finished cross from Moses while for the second one, he had to make sure he had beaten the goal keeper together with Iceland defenders before hitting it in.

The Icelanders had a chance to reduce the goal margin, but Sigurdsson missed a penalty they were awarded at the 83rd minute after consultation of the Video Assistant referee.

In the statistics of that match, Obi Mikel’s team led in almost every aspect. They had 57 percent of the possession, 16 shots on target as against 10 for Iceland

Nigeria are now second with 3 points on the classification table of their group (D), behind Croatia who have 6 points, Iceland are 3rd with 1 point while Argentina are last with 1 point.

All the West African country, who are the youngest squad in the competition need, is a draw in their next match against Argentina, to be played on Tuesday 26 June, and they will have booked a place in the next round.
