Prosecutors are investigating the sudden death of Dinamo Bucharest and Cameroon midfielder Patrick Ekeng after he collapsed during a match in the Romanian capital.
The 26-year-old Ekeng fell to the ground seven minutes after going on as a substitute in a match between Dinamo and Viitorul Constanta on Friday.
Dynamo led 3-2 in the match when Ekeng collapsed in the 69th minute. Local media said he had a heart attack.
Doctors tried to resuscitate Ekeng for an hour at Floreasca Emergency Hospital, where dozens of fans gathered outside.
The match resumed after the incident and finished 3-3.
Fans and some officials have criticized what they claimed were delays in treating Ekeng on the pitch and in taking him by ambulance to the nearby hospital.
Players and staff were seen crying as events unfolded. Some went with him to the hospital.
"At moments like this, words seem insufficient," FIFA President Gianni Infantino said Saturday. "Messages I've read online from teammates, his club in Romania, and former teams, show just how highly Patrick was regarded. I would like to express my sincere condolences to his family and friends, and particularly to the staff, players and fans of Dinamo Bucharest, and the Cameroon national team."
Issa Hayatou, president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), said "it is extremely difficult to find words to understand such a brutal tragedy."
Ekeng also played for Spanish club Cordoba CF, Swiss club Lausanne, and French club Le Mans. He moved to Dinamo in 2015.
Romania's football federation said Saturday the final of the Romanian Cup will be put back a week to May 17 due to Ekeng's death. Dinamo plays CFR Cluj in the final.

The family and friends of Patrick Ekeng Ekeng who died during a championship game between his club, Dinamo Bucarest FC and Viitorul Constanta have disclosed the midfielder did not understand his body and did not want to play, feeling very tired before the game.
“He told his best friend he was not able to play and his coach insisted that he should play.
“He said he was very tired.
“Patrick was a very generous gentleman. It is very painful he is leaving behind a family, it is like a dream, a nightmare”, Monique Chantal, Ekeng’s elder sister told Lions4life.com.
Coach Onana saw Ekeng make the first passes at the ball at his tender age with his third division club, Sao-Paolo.
“He was a child who never disturbed,he was calm, he had no problem.
“I saw images similar to when Marc Vivien Foe former Cameroon midfielder died, in the centre of the field, it is sad, I never cry even when a relation dies but I did for Ekeng”.
Celine Chembi, Ekeng’s mother was out for funeral in the village and her phone started ringing, “what is this kind of news, they asked. At the end I was told Patrick is dead.
“It is difficult to talk about my son at this moment, but I believe in God and submit to the His will”.
The fourth child, Chembi says Ekeng was chosen among others and made a professional soccer career, but it is the will of God that he died.
“If this is football and the life of professional players then this calls for reflection”, Chembi said.
Ekeng lastly spoke to his mother on Thursday before she set out for the village to supervise construction works on his house.
“We did speak every day, but because I was in the village he sent someone to see me and was to call when I came back”.
The mother who had a close bond with the son narrated how he Ekeng became responsible very early at the age of 20.
“I was close to my son, and every time he called me I felt something, I was his confident, he was very obedient, calm and sociable.
“One day he confided in me; when he comes back from training he is always very tired to cook, his wish was to get a wife, we did everything and it was a nice wedding”, she told Lions4life.com.
Dinamo Bucharest is making arrangements for the repatriation of the corps to Cameroon.
Ekeng who played for Cameroon U-20 in 2009 and was part of the squad at the 2015 Nations Cup in Equatorial Guinea moved to Le Mans FC and later to Dinamo Bucarest in Romania.

The Romanian Cup final has been put back a week following the death of Cameroon international Patrick Ekeng during a league match, the Romanian Football Federation announced Saturday.
Ekeng, 26, died after collapsing on the pitch while playing a first division match on Friday with his Romanian side Dinamo Bucharest.
The midfielder fell to the ground without any contact with another player in the 70th minute of the game against Viitorul, just seven minutes after coming on as a substitute.
Ekeng, who joined the Romanian club in January, was rushed to hospital where staff were unable to resuscitate him.
The federation said in a statement that "following the tragedy of what happened in the match between Dinamo and FC Viitorul", all games slated for May 7-9 as well as the May 10 Cup final were postponed.
The Cup final between Dinamo Bucharest and Cluj will now take place on May 17, the federation added.
Before arriving in Romania, Ekeng played for several European clubs, spending four seasons with French Ligue 2 side Le Mans from 2009 to 2013.
The player from Yaounde then transferred to Lausanne in Switzerland from 2013-2014 and Spanish side Cordoba from 2014-2015 before joining Dinamo.
Ekeng made his debut for Cameroon in January 2015 and was named in the squad for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations from which the Indomitable Lions were eliminated in the group stage.
His death also echoed that of his countryman Marc-Vivien Foe, who died of a heart attack in 2003 playing an Confederations Cup match against Colombia at the Gerland Stadium in Lyon, France.
