North West Region-Cameroon:Partial maintenance works set to commence along Bamenda-Wum road

We have gathered on good authority, plans are afoot for maintenance works to kick- start along the less than 80km stretch of road linking Wum ,chief town of Menchum division to Bamenda, regional capital, north west region Cameroon.

Since January, Bamenda-Wum road has been an eyesore.

This new development to give the road a facelift, we have been told is a joint effort of Wum mayor,Dighambong Anthony and Hon Wallang Richard, Menchum south member of Parliament.

Mayor Dighambong Anthony according to a classified source yesterday privately doled out a reasonable sum of money to support the initiative. We are told the heavy duty equipment to be used for the exercise belong to Hon Wallang Richard.

The road issue has been the outcry of the people of Menchum, one of Cameroon's oldest division.

Recently, the road linking Bafut in Mezam division to Wum became almost impassable. Drivers plying the road went ahead to increase the fare to CFA 3000 down from CFA 2000 to the detriment of road users.

Inhabitants of Wum have continued to grumble in obscurity ever since the fare was increased.

We were unable to confirm talks that drivers plying the road had down their tools yesterday in protest of the poor state of the road.

The initiative by mayor Dighambong is being seen as a welcomed relief to road users who have been undergoing a great ordeal in course of using the road.

the maintenance which will include the filling of bad spots along the road with seawall as well as surface terracing is expected to start today.

Meanwhile in another development, a decision banning the circulation of trucks transporting sand from the river Mezam and the Menchum river is expected to be out this week.

North west governor is expected to sign the decision. The presence of trucks transporting sand along the road contributes to the bad state of the road, said an authority.

The bafut council remains the biggest beneficiary to the activities of those trading in sand. At least , the council collects 7million annually from the sector, dependable sources confirm.

Menchum and Donga mantung divisions, it should be noted remain the only two divisions that are not linked to Bamenda by a tarred road in the north west region. Menchum just like Nkambe are part of the ring road project which has been an aged old cry. President Paul Biya had promised during the 90s at a rally in Bamenda to personally supervise the project...
