Bamenda City Mayor Launches Major Waste Management Campaign
**Bamenda, Cameroon** — In a bid to address the growing waste management challenges in Bamenda, City Mayor Paul Achobong Tembang has unveiled a new campaign aimed at enhancing cleanliness throughout the municipality.
This initiative seeks to tackle the issue of waste accumulation on streets and in waterways by encouraging residents to take an active role in waste management.
### A Call to Action
The campaign, which kicked off on Tuesday, July 30, 2024, at the SDO's Esplanade in Bamenda 1 Municipality, introduces a range of measures designed to improve waste disposal practices. Among these measures is a door-to-door garbage collection service intended to prevent the unsightly and unhygienic accumulation of trash in public spaces and waterways.
Mayor Tembang is urging residents to sort their waste at home, distinguishing between biodegradable and non-biodegradable materials. To facilitate this process, the city is providing designated trash cans for responsible waste disposal.
### Community Involvement Essential
Mayor Tembang stressed the critical role of community participation in the campaign, emphasizing, "We must work together to keep Bamenda City clean and free of garbage." The initiative underscores the need for collective effort to maintain a clean and healthy environment, aiming to foster a sense of civic responsibility among residents.
### Pilot Phase and Future Plans
The pilot phase of the campaign marks the beginning of a new approach to waste management in Bamenda. Its success will serve as a benchmark for expanding the program to other municipalities, with the ultimate goal of transforming Bamenda into a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable city.
The launch event at the SDO's Esplanade was attended by local officials, community leaders, and residents, all of whom are expected to play a pivotal role in the campaign's success. With this initiative, Bamenda City is taking a significant step toward improving environmental conditions and ensuring a higher quality of life for its residents.
