“I Am the Legitimate President,” Tchiroma Tells the Nation, Rejects PM Offer
[YAOUNDÉ, Oct 22 – The political standoff deepened Tuesday night as Issa Tchiroma Bakary publicly rejected a reported offer from President Paul Biya to serve as Prime Minister, insisting that he is the legitimate winner of Cameroon’s 2025 presidential election.]

The statement came hours after Jeune Afrique published a report claiming that Biya, through emissaries led by Governor Jean Abate Édi’i, proposed the position to Tchiroma in exchange for recognition of his defeat. In his live broadcast, Tchiroma dismissed the overture as “a total insult,” declaring, “Everybody knows — the Prime Minister in Cameroon has no real power.”
Tchiroma told citizens across the country and the diaspora that his campaign’s compilation of procès-verbaux confirms a clear majority: “It appears clearly that we are victorious with more than 50 percent of the votes cast.” He reiterated his readiness for “a peaceful transition” but warned that any attempt to impose an outcome against the will of the people could destabilize the nation.
“Despite everything, my hand remains extended for a peaceful transition,” he said. “But make no mistake — by law and by the people’s voice, I am the legal and legitimate President of the Republic.”
Background and Verification
Jeune Afrique reported earlier that Biya’s envoys offered Tchiroma the post of Prime Minister to ease tensions ahead of the Constitutional Council’s final proclamation due by October 26. Sources within the ruling party confirm discussions but deny any formal offer.
Meanwhile, verified departmental results compiled by Cameroon Concord under the Transparency Series show Issa Tchiroma Bakary leading nationally with 54.8 percent, compared to 31.3 percent for Paul Biya across 18 departments — roughly 80 percent of the electorate.
Political Reactions
The speech has triggered a wave of reactions. Supporters flooded social media calling it “the speech of legitimacy,” while analysts warn that Biya’s outreach signals growing uncertainty within his camp. Opposition figures praised Tchiroma’s emphasis on peace but echoed his demand for transparency.
In the North, crowds gathered again in Garoua and Maroua following the broadcast, waving flags and chanting “President Tchiroma Now.” Security presence remains heavy but largely restrained.
Outlook
The Constitutional Council is expected to announce final results within days, but tensions remain high as both camps hold their ground. With the international community — including U.S. Congressman Jonathan Jackson — urging respect for the people’s will, pressure is mounting on Yaoundé to prevent a deeper crisis.
Cameroon Concord’s Political Desk will continue monitoring the developments and the government’s response to Tchiroma’s latest declaration.
