Bamenda: Kidnapped Magistrate Shares Heartfelt Statement Following Release
Magistrate Nchang Augustin, recently freed after being kidnapped in Cameroon’s conflict-ridden Northwest region, has broken his silence with a moving and reflective message shared on his Facebook page.
His words reveal not only relief but also a profound sense of gratitude and a renewed mission to spread joy and positivity.
“An Instrument of Happiness”
Reflecting on his release, Nchang expressed awe at the experience:
“Being liberated from custody is very fascinating, especially if done by ‘judges’ who don’t have the capacity to detain or liberate you. It is even more fascinating when the person liberated is a professional judge who has been exercising such powers for more than three decades.”
The magistrate also shared an intriguing anecdote about one of his captors calling to reveal the mastermind behind the kidnapping. In response, Nchang said he “begged him not to tell me” to preserve his joy:
“The happiness of my release was welcomed by all and sundry, and I want to spread that happiness instead of poisoning people’s minds about the evil people who orchestrated it.”
A Grateful Heart
Nchang expressed profound gratitude to his family, friends, and all who supported him throughout the ordeal. He likened the overwhelming solidarity he experienced to witnessing his own funeral while still alive, humorously quoting his late father-in-law:
“The day I die, you people can go to your farms because all of you have already mourned my death.”
Faith and a Renewed Purpose
The magistrate credited his survival to divine mercy, describing it as exceeding human understanding:
“The God we serve is bigger than the one portrayed to us by Christians. His mercy exceeds all human understanding. I am a beneficiary of that mercy.”
Declaring 2025 as his “mission year for happiness,” he urged those who had been saddened by his ordeal to reclaim their joy and celebrate:
“For those who could not enjoy their New Year’s Day because of my demise, I urge all of you to declare today as New Year’s Day and celebrate it.”
An Ambassador for Happiness
In his heartfelt post, Nchang declared his commitment to spreading positivity as an “ambassador for happiness” in 2025, ending his message with warm wishes for the New Year:
“Happy New Year to all of you.”
A Moment of Reflection Amid Crisis
Nchang’s message, marked by forgiveness and a focus on joy, stands out as a beacon of hope in a region plagued by violence and insecurity. His resilience and faith offer an inspiring narrative amid the ongoing challenges in Cameroon’s Northwest and Southwest regions.
