Cameroon Government Cracks Down on Unidentified SIM Cards to Boost Security

Accusing Orange and MTN operators of negligence in identifying SIM cards used by criminals, Minister Atanga Nji has raised valid concerns about the link between unidentified SIM cards and criminal acts such as terrorism, ransom demands, and blackmail. The reported involvement of approximately 450 unidentified SIM cards in such activities highlights the urgency of addressing this issue.

In response to this challenge, the government has issued a strict ultimatum to Orange and MTN operators, demanding compliance with regulations on subscriber identification within a 60-day deadline. This includes providing a comprehensive list of vendors in crisis areas and operators of Mobile Money and Orange Money kiosks.

The government's proactive stance underscores the importance of collaboration between telecommunications companies and regulatory authorities in combating criminal activities facilitated by unregistered SIM cards. By enforcing stringent measures to identify subscribers and vendors, the government aims to enhance security and safeguard citizens from potential threats posed by criminal elements.
