Cameroon: National Gendarmerie recovers 12 stolen cars
The National Gendarmerie is not letting off the pressure on car-jackers and their accomplices. As evidence, the Gendarmerie Legion for the Centre Region on Thursday, December 17, 2015, in Yaounde, presented 12 stolen vehicles recently recovered from those who bought them. Seven of the cars are of Toyota EE 90 make, while the rest are three LOEE 107, one EEA 107 and one Toyota Starlet. Speaking to the media in the premises of the Gendarmerie Squadron opposite Lycee Leclerc in the Ngoa-Ekelle neighbourhood after presenting the cars, the Legion Commander, Col. Tantan Francis, said this followed recurrent complaints from members of the public about the theft of their vehicles. The National Gendarmerie then swung into action to put an end to the activities of car-jackers.
The operations in the Centre and Littoral Regions between August and November 2015 led to the recovery of 12 cars. He said after changing the number plates, repainting them and producing fake car documents in hidden garages, the vehicles were then sold for as little as 500,000 FCFA. After cross-checking with Transport authorities, the true identities of the vehicles were established. Consequently, the owners have been invited to present their papers in order to retrieve them after meeting the State Counsel. Meanwhile, some of those who bought the stolen cars have been arrested while the suspected car thieves themselves are all on the run.
