Cameroon Takes Bold Step Against Corruption: Identity Document Confiscation Prohibited
Yaoundé, March 6, 2024 — A bold initiative to combat corruption and uphold citizens’ rights has been announced by the General Delegate to National Security, Martin Mbarga Nguele.
In a significant directive, Nguele has prohibited the confiscation of identity documents during routine checks by law enforcement officers, even for expired documents. This move represents a substantial departure from past practices and signals a profound shift in police conduct on public roads.
Addressing a Troubling Past
For too long, Cameroonian citizens have faced a troubling dilemma: surrender their identity cards or endure harassment by law enforcement officials. Reports received by the National Anti-Corruption Commission have revealed a distressing pattern of extortion, with victims coerced into paying bribes to retrieve confiscated documents. This unjust practice has eroded public trust in law enforcement and undermined the integrity of the system.
A New Mandate for Reform
Nguele’s directive, disseminated to central and regional police services, emphasizes the imperative of reform. By prohibiting the confiscation of citizens’ identification papers, even if expired, the General Delegate seeks to dismantle the culture of corruption that has plagued law enforcement. This measure represents a decisive step towards restoring public confidence and upholding citizens’ rights.
A Long-Awaited Change
This action builds upon Nguele’s previous directives from June 2023, which aimed to root out corruption and instill accountability within the security apparatus. With this latest prohibition, citizens can now approach routine encounters with law enforcement without fear of arbitrary confiscation or extortion. Their fundamental rights are to be respected, regardless of the circumstances.
A Beacon of Hope
As dusk falls over Yaoundé, citizens welcome this announcement as a beacon of hope in the fight against corruption. While the battle is far from over, the prohibition on identity document confiscation represents a significant milestone. It demonstrates a commitment to justice, transparency, and accountability—a glimmer of optimism for a nation striving for change.
