Cameroonian Forces Free Hostages in Adamawa, Seize Weapons Cache
NGAOUNDÉRÉ, Cameroon, Jan. 21, 2025 — The Cameroonian defense forces achieved a significant victory on Saturday, January 18, with the liberation of seven hostages in the Adamawa Region.

The operation, conducted by the 5th Rapid Intervention Battalion (BIR), was announced during a ceremony at the Governor’s Office Esplanade in Adamawa.
The hostages, who had been abducted in the Vina and Mbere divisions, were freed during special operations that also resulted in the neutralization of over a dozen kidnappers.
Seized Weapons and Materials
The 5th BIR seized a cache of weapons and other items during the operation, including:
- 2,836 rounds of ammunition of various calibers.
- 14 AK-47 assault rifles.
- 10 locally made firearms.
- 18 mobile phones.
- A significant quantity of illicit drugs.
Commendations for the 5th BIR
Colonel Kounaka Menandi Joseph, the commander of the 5th BIR, and his team received high praise from Governor Kildadi Taguieke Boukar for their courage and commitment. The governor emphasized the importance of their work in restoring security to the region and called on the public to collaborate more closely with security forces to combat kidnappings and ransom demands.
“The success of our security forces underscores the need for the population’s full cooperation. Together, we can eradicate the scourge of kidnapping and ensure peace in the Adamawa Region,” Governor Boukar stated.
Gratitude and Relief from Hostages
The freed hostages expressed their profound relief and gratitude to the defense forces for their liberation after enduring harrowing conditions, including torture and mistreatment, during their captivity.
Rising Insecurity in Adamawa
Adamawa, often referred to as the "Region of Hospitality," has faced a growing threat from criminal groups involved in kidnappings and ransom activities. The operation by the 5th BIR demonstrates the government’s resolve to tackle these challenges head-on and restore peace to the area.
A Call for Vigilance
Authorities are urging local residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to security forces. The collaboration between civilians and the military is seen as crucial in preventing further incidents of kidnapping and ensuring the region’s long-term stability.
The successful operation represents a significant milestone in Cameroon’s ongoing efforts to combat insecurity and criminality in its northern regions.
