Debate Erupts Over Francis Ngannou’s Role in Fatal Yaoundé Accident

As previously reported, Ngannou struck Manuella while riding a motorcycle in the Omnisport district of Yaoundé. The former UFC heavyweight champion immediately transported her to the General Hospital and assumed responsibility for her medical expenses. However, the young woman succumbed to her injuries shortly after undergoing surgery, sparking public debate over both the accident and the quality of emergency care in Cameroon.

In a new wave of reactions, activists, lawyers, and public figures have urged authorities to clarify whether Manuella’s death was the result of her injuries or a possible case of medical negligence. “Respecting the procedure is respecting the equality before the law,” said lawyer Christian Ntimbane, who demanded that Ngannou be presented before the public prosecutor in line with Cameroonian criminal law.

Ngannou, who has not commented publicly, has received both support and criticism online. Prominent voices like activist Valsero argue that legal steps must be taken regardless of his public stature, drawing comparisons to past road accidents involving other public figures that allegedly went unpunished. Others, including medical professor Aimé Bonny, have defended Ngannou’s immediate response, calling it a sign of integrity.

A statement circulating from Sandy Boston, a UK-based activist, alleges the cause of death may have been a failed anesthesia during surgery — a theory that remains unverified. Cameroonian hospitals have previously faced criticism over patient safety standards, especially in emergency surgical care.

Ngannou’s legal status remains unchanged as of Monday, with no official charges filed. The incident has reopened a broader conversation in Cameroon around justice, healthcare quality, and the accountability of public figures.
