Inferno at Carrefour Nsam: Fire Rages Through Shops In Yaounde
Yaoundé, Cameroon - A massive fire ripped through several shops at Carrefour Nsam in Yaoundé yesterday, leaving a trail of destruction and despair.
Black Smoke Fills the Sky
Witnesses described a thick plume of black smoke choking the evening sky and a pungent odor engulfing the area. The fire, which erupted around 3 pm near the Damase neighborhood, quickly spread to neighboring stalls.
Accidental Blaze from Waste Burning?
According to residents, the fire originated from a woman burning household waste. A moment of inattention allegedly caused the flames to jump, engulfing multiple shops.
No Injuries, But Devastating Losses
Thankfully, no casualties were reported. However, the material damage is extensive. One distraught victim lamented losing all three of his shops to the flames. "It's a great loss," he said, unsure of how to rebuild.
Investigation Underway
Police apprehended the woman believed to be responsible for starting the fire. She is currently under investigation by the Efoulan Gendarmerie Brigade.
Traffic Disrupted for Hours
The inferno caused significant traffic disruptions for several hours. Despite intervention by law enforcement, the road remained paralyzed until around 9 pm.
Temporary Structures Vulnerable
The report highlights the vulnerability of these shops, likely constructed with temporary materials. This factor undoubtedly contributed to the rapid spread of the flames.
A Community in Need
The fire at Carrefour Nsam has left shop owners facing immense hardship. As investigations continue, the community grapples with the aftermath and the need to rebuild.
