Littoral Governor Vows Law and Order Amid Douala Crime Surge
DOUALA, Cameroon — Amid growing concerns over public safety following a violent attack on September 20, 2024, in the Bali and Bonapriso neighborhoods of Douala, Littoral Governor Samuel Dieudonné Ivaha Diboua has reassured residents that law enforcement is taking action to restore order.
During a press conference held at the governor's office in Bonanjo, Diboua provided updates on the ongoing investigation into the attack, which has been attributed to a gang of young delinquents known as "Microbes."
"Of the fifteen youths involved in the attack last Friday between Douala’s 1st and 2nd districts, eight have been apprehended. They are currently being interrogated by the Littoral Region’s Judicial Police, and all have confessed to their involvement," the governor disclosed.
Diboua, seeking to reassure the public, emphasized that Douala remains under control, despite the recent spike in violence. "Douala is not unlivable, as some may want to suggest. The law will always prevail," he asserted, reaffirming the state's commitment to maintaining order.
The attack, which took place during the evening of September 20, saw a group of youths armed with knives and other weapons assault passersby, stealing mobile phones, money, and other valuables. This is the second fatal attack in the Bali neighborhood in a month, contributing to growing concerns about crime in the economic capital.
France, in particular, has raised alarms about the security situation. The French Consul General in Douala issued a safety advisory to French nationals residing in the city, recommending precautions such as avoiding evening walks, refraining from displaying valuable items, and carrying small amounts of cash for potential handovers in the event of an attack. French citizens were also advised to avoid taking taxis at night, especially when traveling alone.
Governor Diboua’s remarks come at a time when both locals and expatriates are increasingly worried about the rise in criminal activity, with reports of both daytime and nighttime assaults in several districts of the city. While the government has pledged to ramp up security measures, the situation continues to pose significant challenges for law enforcement.
The investigation into the latest attack is ongoing, and local authorities are expected to intensify efforts to dismantle the network of criminal gangs causing unrest in the region. As the city grapples with these challenges, the governor’s assurance seeks to calm the public and restore confidence in Douala’s safety.
