Unveiling Tomorrow's Cameroon Through Today's News

Rita Akana

Gregoire Owona, Minister of Labour and Social Insurance is reportedly at war with the General Manager of the National Social Insurance Fund Alain Olivier Mekulu Mvondo Akame. Cameroon Concord learnt that the minister has written a protest letter to the Prime Minister and Head of Government Philemon Yang raising a finger against the management of the fund. Gregoire Owona noted in his letter to the premier that Mvondo Akame’s policies were in sharp contrast to those of the CPDM government.

The disagreement between Owona and Akame we are told, generated from an earlier action by the CNPS board that sacked two nurses from the National Social Insurance Fund hospital in Yaounde assigned to the late mother-in-law of President Biya- Madam Marie-Rosette Mboutchouang. The decision to sack the two nurses was reached when the National Social Insurance Fund discovered that they were chosen by the Director of Civil Cabinet at the presidency to keep vigil at the bedside of the late Marie-Rossette Mboutchounang and not the medical officer in charge-- a decision that was later on reversed due to pressure from the presidency. Inside sources within the Francophone Beti-Ewondo government say, the days of Alain Olivier Mekulu Mvondo Akame at the head of the CNPS are numbered.
