'Palm wine kills' six people in North West, Cameroon
At least six have died in Tiben, in the Batibo Sub Division of the North West Region after consuming palm wine, reports Cameroon-Info.Net.
Former mayor of the locality, Tenoh Lawrence has confirmed the tragedy, according to the same news site.
The seventh person is said to be critically ill and is receiving medical attention from the Saint John of God Hospital.
Reports say the seven men had drunk the liquor and eaten cola nuts on Saturday. The following morning six of them were found dead while the seventh was seriously ill.
The divisional officer of the area including the state council and some gendarme officers have gone to the scene to assess the situation.
The real cause of the tragedy is yet to be uncovered.
Palm wine is a whitish substance obtained from palm trees or bamboos.
It's a choice drink for most people in Cameroon, especially those who cannot afford to drink beer or other expensive drinks.
