Securing Cameroon’s Airports: A Battle Against Theft
The skies above Cameroon may be vast and expansive, but within the boundaries of its airports, a troubling issue persists: theft and forced entry into passengers’ luggage.
Despite recent successes such as the interception of 15 kilograms of cocaine bound for Sri Lanka, travelers continue to face the distressing reality of stolen belongings during their journeys—both at departure and arrival.
Last week's cocaine seizure at Douala airport was undoubtedly a commendable achievement by customs officials. However, beneath this victory lies a recurring problem: the violation of passengers’ personal space. Travelers, frustrated and disheartened, recount tales of forced suitcases and missing valuables, eroding trust in the system.
One such victim is Cyrille Bojiko, CEO of Balafon Media, who recently returned from the African Cup of Nations (CAN) only to discover a forced suitcase upon arrival. His missing microphone and sound device serve as a poignant reminder of the countless others who have experienced similar losses—a chorus of frustration and disbelief echoing throughout the airport.
The stakes are high, extending beyond individual losses to the nation's reputation and confidence. Cameroon's airports, once symbols of international prestige, now face scrutiny and doubt from foreign travelers. Confidence wavers, and the allure of Cameroon dims as the persistence of theft incidents tarnishes its image.
While security measures are in place, including oversight by the police, gendarmerie, army, and specialized customs units, thefts continue to occur. The bitter taste of insecurity lingers for passengers who expect safety within airport confines.
It is imperative that competent authorities take decisive action to address this issue. The safety and tranquility of passengers demand more than just rhetoric. Effective measures must be implemented to fortify our airports and ensure that travelers’ property remains inviolate. This is not merely a matter of confidence; it is about safeguarding our national reputation on the global stage.
As the sun sets over Douala, let us collectively resolve to protect our skies and preserve the trust of those who journey through our airports. The eyes of the world are upon us, and our actions will speak volumes in restoring confidence and security in our aviation infrastructure.
