Tragic Accident: Government Convoy Strikes and Kills Student in Mbalmayo
A tragic incident occurred on November 22, 2024, in Mbalmayo, when a government convoy, including Ministers Nganou Djoumessi and Paul Motaze, struck and killed a young student on his way to school.
The accident took place on the National Road 9, Mbalmayo-Sangmelima, as the convoy was en route to Sangmelima for the launch of the Olounou-Oveng road construction project.
Eyewitnesses report that a heavy vehicle in the convoy, a transport truck, collided with the student from Ngallan public school. The young boy, who was walking to school, was fatally injured in the incident.
The convoy, led by the Ministers of Public Works (Nganou Djoumessi) and Finance (Paul Motaze), was immediately halted. Upon learning of the tragic accident, both ministers stopped to offer their condolences and assess the situation. The student's body was found lying on the road, and authorities quickly arrived at the scene to manage the aftermath.
This tragedy has raised serious concerns about the speed and reckless driving often associated with high-profile government convoys, especially in busy urban areas. The two ministers were on their way to a public ceremony in Sangmelima to inaugurate the road construction project, but the day’s events took a somber and tragic turn.
The incident has sparked public outrage, with many questioning the prioritization of political agendas over public safety. It also brings to light the ongoing concerns about road safety in Cameroon, particularly for schoolchildren, and calls for better measures to protect civilians from such avoidable accidents.
