Truck Accident on Dschang Cliff Highlights Road Safety Concerns in Cameroon

According to data provided by the Ministry of Transport, speeding remains the leading cause of road accidents, accounting for 35% of reported incidents. This is closely followed by the condition of vehicles (17%), drunk driving (10.5%), the state of the road (10%), poor overtaking (7%), and various other factors (10%). Despite efforts to improve road safety, including the UN decade of action for road safety initiated in 2011, road fatalities remain a significant concern in Cameroon.

Drivers in Cameroon have voiced their frustration, often blaming the government for insufficient investment in road infrastructure.

Ahmadou Gambo, spokesperson for the Cameroon Union of Bus Drivers, emphasized that while some accidents may be attributed to reckless driving, the majority are a result of poor road conditions. He highlighted the difficulties faced by drivers navigating narrow and poorly maintained roads, where avoiding potholes or oncoming vehicles can prove challenging and often leads to accidents.
