Yaounde: Severe floods hit central town, disrupting business activities
Business activities around the busy avenue Kennedy at the heart of Yaounde, Cameroon's capital were halted this afternoon June 30th 2017 due to severe floods. The floods came as a result of the heavy rains which forced the Mfoundi river to break its banks.
Many inhabitants apportion the greatest part of the blames on the town's city council for not being proactive in disaster management. The poor drainage systems and haphazard construction of houses are some of the lead causes of the regular floods witnessed around the 'post central area', a town planning engineer told us.
Despite these reasons, some passersby where quick to draw the conclusions that the "gods of Mfoundi" are angry with the Biya regime for neglecting the Mfoundi elites and grabbing all their lands for government use.
It should be recalled that some years back, president Paul Biya was blocked from getting to his Etoudi palace on his way back from one of his luxurious trips to Europe due to a powerful inundation which almost swept away his multimillion limousine.
At press time, city council authorities had arrived the scene to ensure that no casualties are recorded even though petit traders and hawkers in the area have missed a day of business.
