Yaoundé, Cameroon — October 25, 2024 — In the aftermath of an overnight accident at Yaoundé’s Central Treasury, Finance Minister Louis Paul Motaze has assured government employees that their salaries remain secure. Despite the damage caused by the collision, essential financial operations will continue as scheduled.

Accident Details

On the night of October 24 to 25, 2024, a truck belonging to Hysacam, a waste management company, lost control and crashed into part of the General Treasury located near Yaoundé's Central Post Office. The collision resulted in severe injuries to the driver and his assistant, both of whom have been hospitalized at the Yaoundé Military Hospital, according to an official statement from Minister Motaze.

No Interruption to Treasury Services

The timing of the accident—occurring during the critical period of salary disbursement for civil servants—initially raised concerns over potential disruptions. However, Minister Motaze confirmed that the Treasury's accounting operations have not been compromised. “The various activities of the Treasury remain unaffected, and salary payments will proceed as planned,” he stated, emphasizing that contingency measures have ensured the continuation of financial services.

Response and Recovery Efforts

Emergency services promptly responded to the incident, and repairs are already underway to restore the damaged section of the Treasury building. The Minister underscored the resilience of the financial system and expressed confidence in the ongoing efforts to ensure stability during this unexpected event.

Conclusion

While the accident has resulted in physical damage to a key financial facility and caused injuries to those involved, the government has reiterated that it will not impact the timely payment of salaries to its employees. The Ministry of Finance is closely monitoring the situation and remains committed to maintaining the continuity of all essential operations.
