Unveiling Tomorrow's Cameroon Through Today's News

Breaking

In a concerning development, the Ambazonia Defense Forces (ADF), an armed Separatist militia, has claimed responsibility for a targeted attack on road construction equipment on the Ndu-Nkambe stretch of the Ring Road in the Donga-Mantung division of the restive North West region.

The attack, which occurred in the early hours of Thursday, January 25, 2024, resulted in the burning of two heavy-duty road equipment belonging to the BUNS Construction company, tasked with executing the project in the area. Other vehicles in the company's parking lot suffered extensive damage, with their tires, windshields, and engines shattered by bullets.

BUNS Construction is actively working on the long-awaited stretch of the Ring Road between Mbiyeh and Kumbo, a project co-financed to the tune of 24 billion excluding tax by the State of Cameroon, the African Development Bank, and the Africa Growing Together Fund. The infrastructure initiative also includes a significant component aimed at carrying out activities in favor of young people and women.

This incident follows the ongoing road construction progress in the North-West region, particularly the Ndu-Binka-Nkambe section where MAG SARL company has been actively involved. The minister of public works has expressed concerns over the security situation and has urged construction companies to enhance measures to safeguard both personnel and equipment.

Of particular note is the timing of this attack, occurring barely 24 hours after one of ADF's fiercest fighters, General Effang, was reportedly captured from his hospital bed at Mbingo hospital and later died in the hands of the Cameroonian military. The proximity in time raises questions about whether the attack on BUNS Construction could be a retaliatory act in response to recent events.

The situation adds another layer of complexity to the already volatile region, emphasizing the challenges faced in executing crucial development projects amid ongoing conflict.
