Belo Mayor and Inspector of Basic Education Killed in Amba Attack
Belo, Cameroon — Ambazonian fighters struck a devastating blow today, targeting key public officials in Belo, a town located in the Northwest Region of Cameroon.
The Mayor of Belo Council, Dr. Ngong Innocent, and the Inspector of Basic Education for Belo were killed in an ambush while en route to the grandstand for this year’s National Day celebration.
The Tragic Incident
According to reliable sources in Belo, gunmen believed to be Ambazonian separatists attacked the Mayor and his delegation as they headed to the event. The incident occurred early in the morning, casting a dark shadow over what should have been a day of celebration. The Mayor’s death underscores the dangers faced by public officials in conflict-affected regions, where separatist violence poses a significant threat to stability and security.
A Violent Conflict
The Northwest and Southwest regions of Cameroon have been grappling with a separatist conflict for nearly eight years. What began as peaceful protests in 2016 escalated into violence in 2017, with separatist groups demanding independence for the English-speaking regions. The situation has led to loss of life, displacement, and a climate of fear.
Mayor Ngong Innocent’s Legacy
Dr. Ngong Innocent was a respected figure in Belo. As Mayor, he worked tirelessly to improve the lives of his constituents, particularly the Kom people who make up the majority of the population. His commitment to public service and community development made him a target for those who oppose the government.
Inspector of Basic Education Also Killed
Tragically, the Inspector of Basic Education for Belo, who also served as the Mayor’s Deputy, lost his life alongside Dr. Ngong Innocent. Their deaths leave a void in the local administration and education system.
Ambazonian Reaction
The Ambazonian Communication Network (ACN) reported on the incident, stating that the “colonial Mayor in Belo and two of his deputies have been neutralized for engaging in a banned celebration within the state of Ambazonia.” The ACN’s post was confirmed by Dr. Cho Ayaba, the leader of the Ambazonia Liberation War, who emphasized that those who collaborate with the Cameroonian government would not find protection in Ambazonia.
Urgent Need for Peace
This tragic event underscores the urgent need for efforts to address the root causes of separatist attacks and promote peace and reconciliation. Despite failed peace talks, the international community must continue to engage with all stakeholders to find a lasting solution to the conflict.
Our thoughts are with the families of Dr. Ngong Innocent and the Inspector of Basic Education during this difficult time. May their souls rest in peace.
