Biya Crumbles Under International Pressure, Orders Release Of Jailed Anglophones
President Paul Biya has ordered a stop to the trial of all those who were arrested in the North West and South West Regions in the wake of the Anglophone Crisis and order for their immediate release.
The detainees who have been yawning in detention at the Kondengu Prison in Yaounde will now regain their freedom.
Biya’s order is contained in a press release signed on Wednesday, August 30, by the Secretary General at the Presidency of the Republic, Ferdinand Ngoh Ngoh.
The decree, which was made public by the State, orders the authorities concerned to set free the Anglophone leaders, who have been held for close to eight months.
The Anglophone leaders had called for a protection of an eroding Anglo-Saxon legal system and falling standards of the Anglophone educational system.
They also championed civil disobedience against marginalisation and called for equality between the Anglophone and Anglophone dispensations in the country.
The leaders of the trade unions championing such demands were arrested on January 17 and charged with terrorism and attempts to destabilise the country among other treasonable offences.
The Government reacted with highhandedness and shutdown internet in the two Regions to prevent activists from using social media to pass on information despite pressure from the international community like the United Nations, civil society organisations, opposition political parties, church leaders requesting for the unconditional release of the Anglophone detainees, the Government remained unperturbed.
Biya’s August 30 fiat has therefore, doused the mounting tension and perilous atmosphere that reigned in the country.
