Unveiling Tomorrow's Cameroon Through Today's News

Breaking

Yaoundé, Cameroon  — Steeve Akam, also known by his adopted name in Gabon and pseudonym Ramon Cotta, has been located and is now in the custody of the military tribunal in Yaoundé, following a period of incommunicado detention.

Maître Hippolyte Meli Tiakouang and his team have confirmed that Akam, who had been missing since his abduction in Gabon, was finally accessible for a two-hour meeting in the secure cell of the military tribunal with the permission of the Government Commissioner. This meeting marks the end of his incommunicado status.

During the meeting, Akam revealed he is suffering from partial paralysis on the left side of his body, severe visual impairments, and claims to have been tortured. He reported being held in a dark cell, subjected to intense scrutiny under bright lights, and interrogated multiple times, both with and without torture. His phone and residency card have been confiscated, and he was deprived of the 27,000 CFA francs found on him at the time of his abduction.

Akam's legal status remains unclear, but he faces several serious accusations including terrorism, insurrection, financing terrorism, arms trafficking, and insults towards the head of state and government members. His current condition requires medical attention, including prescribed medication and glasses.

The legal team has obtained medical prescriptions and is seeking to address Akam's immediate needs. He has spoken with non-military personnel for the first time since his detention. Further updates will be provided as the situation develops.
