Cameroon's government is taking decisive steps to address absenteeism within the public service sector. In a recent update from the Minister of Public Service, the government is implementing disciplinary actions against employees who fail to meet their duties.

During a cabinet meeting, the Prime Minister emphasized that the initiative is in line with the President's directive to improve public service delivery. He stated, "We invited the individuals concerned for questioning and have been investigating why they have been absent from their duties. The state cannot afford to pay salaries to individuals who are not performing their responsibilities."

The Ministry is keen to hold accountable those who have been absent without valid reasons, with a commitment to sanctioning individuals who fail to comply with their obligations. The government is determined to reduce the financial burden caused by paying public servants who are not contributing to the nation's development.

Minister Le also highlighted that this effort is part of the broader campaign to eliminate the issue of "ghost workers" in the public sector, a long-standing problem in Cameroon. Between 2022 and 2024, the state had already identified and suspended over 20,000 such ghost workers, saving millions of CFA francs in unnecessary expenses.

The government has set clear deadlines, with the expectation that absentee personnel will be disciplined by the end of the year. According to Minister Le, this initiative is crucial for improving public service delivery and ensuring that taxpayers' money is being used effectively.

In the July cabinet meeting, the government reaffirmed its commitment to improving the public service system. The Prime Minister reiterated that all civil servants must adhere to the rules, attend their posts regularly, and be held accountable for any misconduct.

The government has established clear mechanisms to monitor the attendance and performance of civil servants. Those who continue to evade their responsibilities will face severe consequences, including disciplinary hearings before the Permanent Disciplinary Council of the Public Service.

He also reminded cabinet members of the significance of Decree No. 3008377 of November 12, 2008, which regulates the assignment and monitoring of public service personnel.
