Deadly Explosion in Batibo: At Least Two Civilians Killed
Batibo, June 26, 2024 – A tragic incident has struck the Batibo subdivision, claiming the lives of at least two civilians. An improvised explosive device (IED), suspected to have been planted by separatist fighters, detonated in the Oshum area, resulting in the death of the driver and another occupant of a passenger vehicle.
The divisional officer for Batibo, Mr. Esalakwe Emile, has confirmed the details of this harrowing event.
The explosion, which occurred around 4 PM, completely destroyed the vehicle, a Toyota Corolla 100. Debris from the car was scattered over a wide area, illustrating the powerful impact of the blast.
The young driver, Fomunyoh Charles Musa, who regularly drove the Bamenda-Batibo route, was among those killed. Hailing from Awom village near Guzang in the Batibo subdivision, Musa's death has sent shockwaves through his community. Alongside him, another male passenger perished in the explosion, although his identity has yet to be confirmed.
In the aftermath of the explosion, elements of the Rapid Intervention Battalion (BIR) arrived swiftly at the scene. They managed to rescue one surviving passenger, who has since been taken to the hospital for treatment.
This incident underscores the ongoing violence and instability in the region, with civilian lives continuously at risk due to the conflict between separatist groups and government forces. Our thoughts are with the victims and their families during this tragic time.
