FIFA Steps In: Cameroon's FECAFOOT Urged to Maintain Independence
ZURICH - FIFA has intervened in the escalating conflict between the Cameroon Football Federation (FECAFOOT) and the Ministry of Sports and Physical Education (Minsep), emphasizing the necessity for FECAFOOT to maintain independence in its governance.
The global football governing body issued an official letter calling for a revision of the 2015 agreement between the two entities, highlighting concerns over external interference in the federation's operations.
The letter, dated August 26, 2024, underscores that while FECAFOOT and the Ministry of Sports have a collaborative agreement in place, FECAFOOT must retain full autonomy over its sporting and organizational decisions. FIFA stressed that this autonomy is crucial for FECAFOOT to meet its statutory obligations without undue influence from external parties.
FIFA cited its statutes, particularly Article 14, Al. 1 lit. i, and Article 19, which mandate that member associations manage their affairs independently. Any failure to comply with these requirements could result in sanctions, including suspension from international competitions, regardless of whether the interference comes from external sources beyond the federation's control.
The intervention comes amid growing tensions between FECAFOOT and Minsep, with disputes over key decisions affecting Cameroon's national football teams. FIFA's letter also reiterates a recommendation made in May 2024, urging the prompt revision of the 2015 convention that currently governs the relationship between FECAFOOT and the Ministry of Sports. This revision, FIFA noted, is essential to clarify the rights and responsibilities of both parties and prevent further conflicts that could undermine the governance of Cameroonian football.
The situation reflects broader challenges faced by football federations worldwide in balancing government relations with the need for operational independence—a core principle in FIFA's governance framework. As the spotlight remains on Cameroon, FIFA's stance serves as a reminder of the potential repercussions of political interference in football administration.
FECAFOOT has yet to respond to FIFA's latest intervention, and it remains to be seen how both parties will address the call for a revised agreement. However, with the potential threat of suspension looming, swift action may be required to safeguard the future of Cameroonian football on the international stage.
