Global Influence Clash: Russia's Sahel Moves Prompt U.S. Diplomatic Vigilance.
In a geopolitical landscape marked by strategic shifts, Chad's President Ahmet Deby engaged in a consequential meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow,
coinciding with U.S. Secretary of State addressing Sahel security challenges in Nigeria. This dual diplomatic activity signifies a potential battleground for influence in the Sahel region.
During the televised meeting, Putin extended congratulations to President Deby for successfully stabilizing Chad, underscoring Russia's attentive monitoring of the country's security situation. Putin expressed contentment with the recently held constitution referendum and conveyed confidence in the forthcoming elections, lauding Deby for achieving stability.

In a solemn moment, Deby offered his condolences to Putin in the aftermath of a military plane crash in the Belgorod region of Russia. The crash claimed the lives of all 74 individuals on board, including 65 Ukrainian prisoners of war. Deby expressed heartfelt sympathies for the tragic incident, emphasizing solidarity between nations.
President Deby, in power since 2021 following a coup after his father's passing, has historically maintained Chad as a crucial bastion of French influence in the Sahel. However, the Moscow meeting hints at a potential reorientation of alliances, suggesting a strategic shift as Putin endeavors to foster ties with this Sahelian nation.
This diplomatic development coincides with Niger's prime minister's recent visit to Moscow, culminating in an agreement to fortify military ties. The collective diplomatic maneuvers underscore a broader recalibration of geopolitics in the Sahel region, with Russia actively expanding its influence.
