Idabato Divisional Officer Abducted in Pirate Attack Near Nigerian Border
In a concerning development, the Divisional Officer (D.O.) of Idabato, Ewane Roland, was kidnapped around 2 a.m. on Tuesday, October 1, 2024, along with a senior staff member of the Idabato Council, Etongo Ismaiel.
This alarming incident took place in the Ndian Division of Cameroon’s South West Region. According to local authorities, the abductors, reportedly Nigerian separatists, arrived on boats and fled with their hostages toward the Nigerian border. The area has seen a rise in pirate activities, with many of the attacks attributed to Nigerian militants crossing into Cameroonian waters.
In a swift response, the Senior Divisional Officer (SDO) for Ndian, Gilbert Guibai Baldena, sent a confidential message to the Nigerian Consulate in Buea, urgently requesting their cooperation in tracking down the kidnappers. The letter emphasized the need for immediate cross-border communication and action to recover the kidnapped individuals.
This incident adds to the growing insecurity in the Bakassi Peninsula, a region notorious for its complex geopolitical tensions and recurring pirate activities. Both Cameroonian and Nigerian authorities are expected to coordinate closely in the coming days to address this incident and curb the rising insecurity in the area.
This is a developing story, and further updates are expected as more information becomes available from both Cameroonian and Nigerian authorities.
