Mr Biya announced on Monday that he had granted presidential pardon to Lydienne Yen Eyoum. The French lawyer had been serving a 25 years sentence at the Kondengui High Security prison in Yaounde, accused by the Special Criminal Court of siphoning off 1,077 billion CFA francs (1.5 million euros).
Her lawyers welcomed the news of her unexpected release. Lydian Yen Eyoum had indeed exhausted all legal options to regain her freedom. On the 9th of June 2015, the Supreme Court, the highest court in Cameroon, had re confirmed her sentence in her last appeal.
Christian Charriere-Bournazel Master, one of his advice says her release is the result of diplomatic negotiations between France and Cameroon . He goes further to say President Hollande had very firmly mounted pressure on Paul Biya to release Ms. Yen Eyoum. What actually transpired behind doors that pushed Mr Biya to the walls to grant her immediate freedom is yet to be known. However she is free. We are obviously deeply happy for her.
Lydian Yen Eyoum had always maintained her innocence. At the time of her release ,She had already been incarcerate for more than six years.
