Agbor Felix Nkongho Release: What’s next?

Those who knew Barrister Abgor Balla before now will agree with me that, the critic seems to have toned down probably for fear of re-arrest or to re-strategize on his next move. But the million dollar question is what does the man rated among Africa’s most influential 100 youths intend to do next?

With the new found popularity, fame and favour he has, will he let Cameroonians down as Fru Ndi did in the 90s when all he had to do was to give a speech? Will Agbor Balla answer the peoples’ call, participate in the upcoming presidential elections and bring the much needed change he has been campaigning for or will he use his newly acquired international recognition to secure a top job with the government or international organizations such as his former employers the UN, IMF or World Bank?

It is reasonable to say that the government might have just given him a substantial reason to leave Cameroon, grab any nationality of his choice and pick up social media activism like many before him, causing untold pain to those back here in Cameroon who felt the pinch of their actions. Having mastered, studied and experienced what many Africans and Cameroonians in particular go through in the hands of an autocratic regime, what will Agbor Balla-who like Pa Fru Ndi in the 90s who had millions of Cameroonians willing to die for him-do? Run away? Seems like a safe and easy idea.

Or will he like many great leaders in history take a bold step and attempt to change things even though it might cause him the ultimate sacrifice? In his youthful age, very active and full of vigour, the president of Fako Lawyers’ Association and the Central African Vice president of the African Bar is at the right age in his life where he can impact his generation and do what many before him failed to correct.

Ok let’s give him some credit, for without his efforts which landed him in jail, the common law bench at the supreme court, the creation of the common law department in some state universities, the creation of the bilingualism and multiculturalism commission and others significant changes might not have seen the day of light. But just how far is he willing to go for his people?

All eyes are now turned towards this young man from Great Soppo, Buea, who says he has a vision and a dream for his people, but fears are rife that after having a fore taste of what life can be like when one stands against an African autocrat, Agbor Balla might just be reconsidering his plans.
