Cameroon Takes Stride Towards Malaria Eradication: Introduces Malaria Vaccine into Immunization Program
In a significant move aimed at bolstering the nation's fight against malaria and curbing the associated morbidity and mortality rates, the Minister of Public Health, Dr. MANAOUDA Malachie, has announced the inclusion of a malaria vaccine in the Expanded Programme on Immunization in Cameroon.

The country has taken a proactive step by introducing the Mosquirix™ RTS malaria vaccine, a carefully selected vaccine with pre-qualification, ensuring its quality, efficacy, and safety. The Minister of Public Health received a consignment of 331,200 doses on November 21, 2023, marking a pivotal moment in the nation's commitment to disease control.
Starting January 22, 2024, the official rollout of the malaria vaccine will commence, targeting all children aged 6 months as of December 31, 2023, for the initial dose. Subsequent doses will be administered according to the existing vaccination calendar. The vaccine will be available in both public and private health facilities across the 42 selected health districts, as designated by the Expanded Programme on Immunization and the National Malaria Control Programme.{loadmoduleid 378}
The introduction of this vaccine not only signifies a breakthrough in disease prevention but also underscores Cameroon's commitment to utilizing proven and internationally recognized tools for malaria control. The focus on children, a vulnerable demographic, aligns with global strategies to reduce the burden of malaria in the most susceptible populations.
In preparation for the official launch, communication activities will be carried out in relevant health areas. These efforts aim to engage community leaders, mobilize parents, and educate caregivers in the targeted health zones. It is essential to create awareness and build trust within communities, ensuring a seamless integration of the malaria vaccine into routine immunization practices.
Parents are encouraged to continue vaccinating their children at healthcare facilities according to the established schedule. The Minister of Health emphasizes that the provided vaccines are not only safe but also free and effective. This assurance aims to alleviate any concerns within the community, fostering widespread acceptance of the malaria vaccine as a vital tool in the ongoing battle against this deadly disease.
Cameroon's initiative to introduce the malaria vaccine into the Expanded Programme on Immunization marks a commendable step towards achieving the broader goal of malaria eradication. By integrating this vaccine into routine immunization, the nation is paving the way for a healthier and more resilient future, particularly for its youngest citizens.{loadmoduleid 377}
