South Korea Pledges CFA8.5 Billion for Yaoundé Emergency Center Expansion in Cameroon
In a significant step towards enhancing emergency medical care in Cameroon, South Korea has committed CFA8.5 billion for the expansion of the Yaoundé Emergency Center (Cury). The official agreement, signed on Tuesday, November 28, in Yaoundé, solidifies the partnership between Alamine Ousmane Mey, Minister of Economy, Planning, and Spatial Planning (Minepat), and the Country Director of the Korea International Cooperation Agency (Koica).
Minepat emphasized that the funds, characterized as a donation, are poised to elevate both the capacity and quality of emergency care in the capital. The allocation will not only contribute to the enhancement of the Yaoundé Emergency Center but also facilitate comprehensive training programs for emergency medicine specialists and medical technicians in Cameroon. Notably, a dedicated call center is on the horizon as part of this initiative.{loadmoduleid 377}
The Yaoundé Emergency Center, inaugurated in 2016 with Koica's previous financial backing of $84 million, stands as a groundbreaking institution in Central Africa. Its primary mandate includes the reception and treatment of patients facing life-threatening conditions, ranging from myocardial infarctions and pulmonary embolisms to various fractures resulting from accidents.
Beyond the Yaoundé Emergency Center, South Korea, facilitated by Eximbank Korea, has made substantial investments of nearly CFA42 billion in the construction of the Garoua General Hospital in the northern region of Cameroon. This hospital is recognized as a flagship project in the bilateral cooperation between the two nations, signifying South Korea's commitment to extending support beyond the healthcare sector. The scope of South Korea's financial assistance encompasses projects in agriculture, energy, education, and digital transformation, reflecting a holistic approach to bilateral cooperation.
The agreement for the Strengthening Emergency Medicine System Project in Cameroon follows the official visit of South Korea's Prime Minister, Han Duck-soo, marking a historic occasion. This visit, the first by a South Korean head of government to Cameroon since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1961, provided a platform for both nations to reaffirm their commitment to intensify cooperation across various domains.{loadmoduleid 378}
South Korea's substantial financial commitment to the expansion of the Yaoundé Emergency Center underscores its dedication to advancing emergency medical care in Cameroon. This collaborative effort not only strengthens healthcare infrastructure but also signifies a broader commitment to multifaceted cooperation between the two nations. As the Strengthening Emergency Medicine System Project takes shape, it reflects the shared vision of Yaoundé and Seoul to foster enduring partnerships for the benefit of their respective communities.
