Cavaye Yeguié Djibril: From Speaker to First-Class Chief, A Dual Role in Cameroon
In response to directives from Ferdinand Ngoh Ngoh, the Secretary-General of the Presidency, Cameroon’s Minister of Territorial Administration, Paul Atanga Nji, has initiated the formal process to elevate Cavaye Yeguié Djibril, Speaker of the National Assembly, to the prestigious status of First-Class Chief.
This move follows a request submitted by several traditional chiefs to the President of the Republic, Paul Biya.
In their letter, the traditional leaders expressed their collective support for Cavaye Yeguié Djibril, who also serves as Lamido of Mada and Honorary President of Cameroonian Traditional Chiefs. The letter highlights their unanimous decision to appoint him as their spokesperson in all decision-making spheres within Cameroon. The chiefs' statement read:
"Together, from this blessed day onward, we give our mandate to our colleague, Cavaye Yeguié Djibril, Lamido of Mada and Honorary President of the Traditional Chiefs of Cameroon, to be our spokesperson and represent us in all decision-making platforms of Cameroon."
This move solidifies Cavaye Yeguié Djibril's standing not only as a political figure but also as a traditional leader, further expanding his influence in both realms. His elevation to First-Class Chief is expected to formalize his authority in the traditional leadership structure of the country, representing the chiefs in key political and cultural matters.
Background on Cavaye Yeguié Djibril
Cavaye Yeguié Djibril has been a dominant figure in Cameroonian politics for decades, serving as the Speaker of the National Assembly since 1992. As a traditional ruler, he holds significant sway over local and national issues, especially in the Far North Region of Cameroon. His confirmation as a First-Class Chief will elevate his role and influence further, symbolizing the intertwining of political and traditional authority in Cameroon.
This latest development underscores the importance of traditional leadership within the nation's governance structure, with chiefs playing key roles in bridging the gap between local customs and national decision-making.
