Unveiling Tomorrow's Cameroon Through Today's News

Breaking

Douala, Cameroon — June 9, 2025 — The streets of Douala have turned into a militarized zone. More than 100 members and supporters of the Cameroon Renaissance Movement (CRM/MRC) have been arrested between Sunday and Monday, dozens of others injured or blocked, and the entire Bonapriso neighborhood placed under siege by security forces. All of this, triggered by the presence of one man: Professor Maurice Kamto.

Returning from a high-impact meeting in Paris just days ago, Kamto’s mere arrival in Douala has thrown the Biya regime into full crisis mode. This morning, confusion reigned among security forces. The police, reportedly under the direct orders of National Security boss Martin Mbarga Nguele, wanted to violently dislodge Kamto. But the gendarmerie refused, splitting the state’s repressive apparatus down the middle.

A Siege Without Law

Hundreds of heavily armed forces surrounded the private residence where Kamto had been forcibly confined since Sunday. No legal order was ever issued for his restriction. When emissaries of the Littoral Governor attempted to pressure Kamto to leave Douala, he simply asked: “Where is the written expulsion order?” The regime had none.

Kamto, defiant as ever, declared he would not leave the city without first meeting his supporters at the MRC headquarters in Deido. “If the regime plans to hold me here for a month, I’m prepared to stay for a year,” he told sources inside his team.

Government Tries to Relocate Kamto Under Surveillance

The government now seeks to place Maurice Kamto under de facto house arrest in Yaoundé. After failing to legally expel him from Douala, the regime has forcibly escorted him toward the capital. Kamto was seen leaving Bonapriso under heavy security convoy. Regime mouthpieces claim he is leaving "voluntarily" — a bold lie.

Journalist Polycarpe Essomba, a known regime collaborator and close affiliate of the Presidential Civil Cabinet, publicly claimed Kamto “chose” to leave Douala. Essomba, previously bankrolled by disgraced former defense minister Edgar Alain Mebe Ngo'o, was notably silent during Kamto's unlawful detention and the military lockdown of Douala.

He is not an independent journalist — he is an accessory to authoritarian propaganda.

Chaos, Arrests, and Rising Tension

At least 30 CRM supporters are being held at the Mboppi gendarmerie, with others detained at the judicial police. National exams including the BTS and Probatoire have been disrupted. Despite these tactics, MRC cadres continued to defy the crackdown and gather near Kamto’s residence.

On Monday afternoon, Kamto and his team left under armed escort. Though the regime pretends this was a peaceful departure, it is clear: this was a forced relocation by a regime terrified of its own people.

Kamto’s Message: Resistance

If Kamto went to Paris, it’s because he is banned from holding rallies in his own country. That’s the reality of Cameroon in 2025 — a place where speaking freely can land you in jail or worse.

When Kamto invoked Senegal in his Paris speech, it wasn’t a threat — it was a call to action. “No change comes without assuming responsibility,” he said. That includes defending one’s vote, even at great personal risk, in a state ruled by soldiers and secret police.

The Bigger Picture: A Regime in Fear

The Biya regime, in power for over four decades, appears increasingly paranoid ahead of the 2025 presidential elections. At 92 years old, President Paul Biya struggles with mobility and cognitive clarity, as evident during the May 20 celebration where he appeared visibly incoherent, even reportedly urinating on himself in public.

And yet, his inner circle pushes for another term. Meanwhile, dissent is crushed, the courts are weaponized, and the media is manipulated. Kamto has once again become the target of a military court, not because he broke any laws — but because he dared to tell the truth.

Voices of Dissent Speak Out

Renowned Cameroonian artist Richard Bona mocked the government’s hysteria: “A small meeting in Paris with undocumented immigrants, and already the military court is involved? Just watch — until the last drop.”

The symbolism is clear: an aging dictator, scared of his own reflection, using the full force of the state to crush even peaceful political gatherings.

This is an ongoing situation — and the world is watching.
